Transponder Codes

As its name suggests, transponders send out an encoded signal with an eight-digit number code whenever it is questioned by air traffic control. It is also used to send specific messages to the air traffic control system in the event of an emergency or to alert controllers of changes in weather conditions. The VIN code is a serial number with six digits that identify a car or truck. The final digit is also the check number, and the other numbers are transliterated into numbers. For example, the first digit gets a value of eight; then each subsequent digit increases by one until it reaches nine at the seventh digit. Then, it becomes two.
